Called “shareables” on the menu, the brûléed oranges have goat cheese and local microgreens. The fried green tomatoes are topped with green goddess dressing and pickled onion, and the tuna poke features sashimi-grade tuna and poke sauce. Overall, although the proteins in our entrees were cooked exceptionally well, the flavors here missed the mark for us- the recurring sweetness was something that stuck with us well after leaving. Whether or not this was something we misunderstood from the menu descriptions or that we just did not craft a proper meal outright remains to be seen, but this one ended up being not quite what we expected.

The chicken was fried excellently, with lots of perfectly crispy, craggy bits and a not-too-thick batter, and the portion was also huge. The dining areas and bar span multiple floors- our table was in the level closest to the door. We've always thought this space was awkward, even when previous restaurants were in this space.

Summer Fridays Are Back at the Frick

With plenty of tables, a full bar and super fast and friendly service, Texas de Brazil is a casual restaurant perfect for hosting families or large groups of meat-lovers for a birthday dinner in Pittsburgh. Cocktails include crowd-pleasing flavors with a slant towards fruitiness. The wine list leans heavy into California, and the draft beer list is quite small with the likes of Miller Lite and Yuengling (plus a few bottle options with one or two local choices). A brand-new, modern American eatery brings style and whimsy to a light-filled corner in downtown’s historic Union Trust Building. The much-anticipated restaurant was created by Pittsburgh natives Herky and Lisa Pollock, and Michelle and Chef Ricky Kirsop, who meld nostalgia and modern-day fun. With globally-inspired design elements, and a menu helmed by Executive Chef Jeff Maag that features reimagined takes on familiar favorites, a refreshing air of playfulness dominates the venue’s airy spaces — and memorable dishes, too.

For what we thought would be a spirit-forward drink, it was a little surprising that it was served over small ice cubes, and it was a little sweeter than we expected. We also tried the signature Ritual Margarita, with tequila, carrot juice, Cointreau, lime, agave, and a hibiscus salt rim. The carrot flavor was interesting but overall, this drink was simply way too sweet for our palates. We thought the menu descriptions of the food and drinks didn't align with what we thought we were ordering, namely in terms of the flavors and presentation. Overall, the proteins in the dishes we ordered were cooked well, but we just thought the flavors had a recurring theme of being far too sweet.

Brunch delights include fluffy stacks of lemon meringue pancakes, pineapple upside-down pancakes and Fruity Pebbles French toast, plus savory options like fried chicken sliders with blueberry jalapeño jam. While lighter lunch and dinner offerings range from salads to seafood creations (don’t miss the crudo or triple-stacked salmon club), Pittsburgh natives will get a kick out of modern-day spins on comforting, regional classics. Take for example, the elevated version of chipped chopped ham barbecue, or the Turkey Devonshire featuring four pieces of candied pepper bacon theatrically hanging from clips above the hearty dish. Order the seven-layer cake that comes with a poof of cotton candy and some sparkler flair. She says she’s not sure yet what she’s going to do with the $25,000 prize money — possibly a vacation — but it’s tough for a chef at a new restaurant to take time off. She also hopes that her victory will help shine a spotlight on pastry chefs, who are often an overlooked part of the culinary world. The restaurant is about providing memorable and delicious moments for everyday diners as well as guests who have something to celebrate, said Ritual House co-owner Herky Pollock, in a statement. Sweet and sour Brussels sprouts were a second appetizer for the night which, while having an expected sweetness, was perfectly balanced with a zippy acidity from the citrus that we appreciated.
